My Memories of Elizabeth

Created by Jessie 2 years ago

I knew Elizabeth from when we were children and she was known as Muriel! We did attend the same school, but she was in the year above me, so it was when we were in the same Guide company that we really got to know each other. The Guides met, with our captain, Miss Druce, in the hut in the grounds of "Whalebones" in High Barnet, where there were large bones making an arch over the entrance gate. I believe they are still there! As it was wartime, we were unable to go far for Guide camps, but enjoyed our spells at Hatfield House campsite each summer.

When Muriel/Elizabeth went to Birmingham University she joined the university Scout and Guide Club, who went on various trips during vacations, and I once went with them for a holiday on the Norfolk Broads, which was great fun, though I can't remember how I  came to be invited, as I attended London University!

One of the Scouts in the club was Bill, whom she later married, and I was one of the bridesmaids along with Maureen at their wedding - a lovely occasion. Married women were not usually asked to be bridesmaids in those days, so when I was married a little later, Elizabeth wasn't asked to be one of mine! We went on to have our children at around the same times, which was nice when we occasionally met.

I greatly admire all of Elizabeth's achievements, and she was a really good friend,
